10 Things to Do in September

There are plenty of pagan activities, celebrations, commemorations and festivals to keep you busy year-round. September is just as busy as the rest of the year, especially with the addition of school activities for many. Here are ten things you might want to take part in this September.

10. Harvest Moon. Also known as Singing Moon or Wine Moon, Harvest Moon marks the time of the year when the last of the year’s crops are being reaped before winter comes upon us. To celebrate, wear earth tone colors, honor a harvest deity such as Demeter or Brighid, or hold your own full moon rite.

9. International Day of Peace. Many pagans like to participate in this day by holding a ritual or casting a spell for world peace. Though all pagan faiths are different, most maintain peace and honoring the earth as strong values. You could say a simple prayer for peace, wear a peace amulet (such as a peace sign or dove), or sing a song of peace.

8. Pagan Pride Day. Pagan Pride Day usually takes place in September, and there are plenty of cities hosting events if you’d like to get involved. Chicago is having their festival on September 5, Arkansas is celebrating on September 12, and Oklahoma is doing theirs on the 26th. Not all events will be taking place in September, however; to find the one nearest you, visit The Pagan Pride Project.

7. Apple Month. Who doesn’t love apples! You may want to teach your children myths about apples (such as the Greek Apple of Discord, or the American Johnny Appleseed). Use apples in spellwork to encourage abundance and fertility, or cut an apple’s skin off in one long peeling and cast it over your shoulder to reveal the initial of your true love.

6. Pagan Homeschooling. If you already homeschool your children you may already be engaged with this. If not, and you’d like to try—or to supplement your child’s public education—click here for some valuable resources.

5. International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer: On September 16, focus on keeping the earth clean and your life green. If you already make this a practice, share your habits with others.

4. National Rice Month: Get some lucky green rice or make your own to attract prosperity.

3. Mushroom Days: September 12 through 13, you may want to celebrate these days. Teach your children about using mushrooms (especially which ones are poisonous and which ones are not!), cook with them, or build a fairy home with mushrooms.

2. Ostara. In the Southern Hemisphere, the Spring Equinox is the 22nd of September this year. Hold your first day of spring ritual, or if you can’t find the time, give a simple blessing to welcome in spring.

1. Mabon. The Autumn Equinox is on September 22nd this year for the Northern Hemisphere. Celebrate with your own Mabon ritual to welcome in the fall, honor a Mabon-associated deity, make an altar, or learn more here
